Product Description An epic Celtic sojourn in search of ancestors, nostalgia, and the worlds greatest round of golf
In his thirties, married, and staring down impending fatherhood, Tom Coyne was well familiar with the last refuge of the adult male: the golfing trip. Intent on designing a golf trip to end all others, Coyne looked to Ireland, the place where his father had taught him to love the game years before. As he studied a map of the island and plotted his itinerary, it dawned on Coyne that Ireland was ringed with golf holes. The country began to look like one giant round of golf, so Coyne packed up his clubs and set off to play all of it. And since Irish golfers didnt take golf carts, neither would he. He would walk the entire way.
A Course Called Ireland is the story of a walking- averse golfer who treks his way around an entire country, spending sixteen weeks playing every seaside hole in Ireland and often battling through all four seasons in one Irish afternoon. Coyne plays everything from the top-ranked links in the world to nine-hole courses crowded with livestock. Along the way, he searches out his familys roots, discovers that a once-poor country has been transformed by an economic boom, and finds that the only thing tougher to escape than Irish sand traps are Irish pubs. By turns hilarious and poetic, A Course Called Ireland is a magnificent tour of a vibrant land and a paean to the worlds greatest game.

A great book, full of laughs and insight February 10, 2010 John W. Matney (Clayton, California) I was expecting something a little drier. Instead, I got stories that had me laughing out loud, the vicarious drinking of Guinness, otherwise known as Mother's Milk in my household and descriptions of golf courses that I know I have to see for myself. Well done!!
A Course Called Ireland December 18, 2009 Kevin Walsh (Boston, MA) Tom Coyne is a great writer. I'm not sure if I want him to be my caddy or my partner in a four-ball. But I'm sure of this, I want to have a pint with him in the 19th Hole after we're done either way. What a great story and storyteller. What did I want going into the effort? I wanted to know more about my ancestral homeland. Now I've got it and I didn't have to bury myself in the stacks of a dusty library to do it. Cheers mate! The Marrow in Me

A Must Read for Anyone Planning a Trip to Ireland, Golfer and Non-Golfer Alike September 17, 2009 Gerald Padian (New York) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
How this guy convinced his sainted wife to let him golf in Ireland for 4 months with a series of friends could be a book unto itself (and no doubt a best seller). This was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time. Coyne captures not only the character of just about every links course in Ireland but also the character of the Irish people themselves. Coyne's coverage of the pubs and B & B's he encounters along the way are better than any travel guide you'll ever find. My family and I went to one of the pubs he recommended this summer (the Beach Bar). We had one of the most enjoyable meals we've every had in Ireland. Reading one passage on a business trip about the "Incident" had me laughing so loud the flight attendant asked me to put the book down. I eagery await Coyne's next book (how about walking from Malin Head to Kinsale and playing every parkland course?). Well done!
Fantastic Book About Ireland, Golf and Life July 26, 2009 Kilkenny Kid (Atlanta, GA USA) Just finished this book today. What a great read. Coyne has a great sense of humor and an ear for irony that makes this much more than a golf book. Anyone who has traveled to Ireland will relate to the many funny situations that he encounters along the way. He toured the country in 2007 at the height of the Celtic Tiger economy and his insights on how much the country has changed in just the last 20 years are spot on.
Bravo to the author - can't wait to see how you follow up this one.
