this is a POS May 22, 2010 Darreld Walton I've never had a bigger piece of 'stuff' in my life. We actually got to watch one DVD on the thing. After that, it sits there, whirs, and clicks, and shuts itself off.
The Family has used Magnavox branded products for decades, but NOT ANYMORE!!!
IF I could rate this in the negative, it'd be there with an infinity symbol.
AVOID MAGNAVOX AT ALL COSTS December 13, 2009 Brian (Irving, TX) WE HAVE THIS MODEL AND GUESS WHAT? ONCE THE BATTERY QUITS YOU ARE OUT OF LUCK BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY TO CHANGE THE INTERNAL BATTERY! HAVE TO THROW WHOLE DEVICE AWAY! WHAT A WASTE.
MAGNAVOX DOESNT MAKE OR SUPPORT THIS MODEL SO THEY WONT HELP YOU!
Worst company I've had the pleasure to do business. January 28, 2009 K. Wall (Palm Desert) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the story of how I began the long attempt to attain support for my Magnavox Portable DVD player Model MPD835 on Monday, January 26, 2009. Called Magnavox's phone number from their website @ 1-800-705-2000 three times and held for 8 plus minutes the first time, hung up tried again. Was on hold for another 6 minutes before the phone rang and hung up. Tried the third time and was on hold for another 6 minutes and the phone rang and than hung up.
Got on the Philips/Magnavox website and contacted the number provided on the website; 1-888-744-5477. Spoke to a gentlemen named Steve S. from Philips/Magnavox and told that the product was supported at a different call center and gave me the number 888-605-8610 and reconfirmed the phone number twice. Called said number and received recorded voice message that the phone number had been changed to 800-712-5000. Called the number and got an infomercial. Gave Steve the benefit of the doubt and tried 800-605-8610 and told the number had changed to 800-712-5000. Called the number and got connected to a customer service representative, Rachael w/ id badge number 7058 from funai-corp.com @ 800-712-5000, that has no affiliation to Philips/Magnavox. I provided her with the model number at an attempt to find the product and it did not match any model number that was supported at this call center. I gave up for the night and began calling the following day.
Called again Tuesday, January 27, 2009 number 1-800-705-2000. Finally got a person and spoke to a Louis and said the model number was not supported by this call center and given a number to 1-800-216-5156. The phone continued to ring and received a recorded voice message that this number is not in service. Recalled 1-800-705-2000 and spoke with another gentlmen who sad the Magnavox player is not a Magnavox and made by another company so I would have to speak to a supervisor. I spoke to a supervisor by the name Angela. She was empathetic to the story above and placed me on hold so she could verify the phone number. She called and did not get a response herself. She took my name, phone number, and address and would do research and contact me by 2 pm EST with information on how I could attain support for the product. She began a case and provided me with reference number 7GPNC. I received a call from an IBM phone line and got a message from Angela telling me their was absolutely nothing they could do but for me to have a nice day. I have purchased Magnavox and Philips before. However, I will never purchase another item from these companies or anyone affiliated with them. I will spend the extra $20 and buy from a reputable source.
Buyer beware!!!!
Skip it. November 30, 2008 Penny Duncan (Atlanta, GA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased one of these a couple of years ago when ours died while on vacation. I was so pleased with the purchase.
When we needed another player a little over a year later, we bought another just like it.
...A week later the original died. Magnavox was no help troubleshooting it. Offered to fix it for some outrageous amount, almost equal to the purchase price. I tried several tips I found on the internet with no luck.
...A few months later, the second unit died as well. We replaced it with a Sony and have had better luck with it so far.
The other pros regarding the unit are a moot point now. Our Mintek was silver and after five years looks like we found it in a junk yard with so much paint scratched off, but it still works! After two years, our Magnavox was still quite pretty. Now it is pretty at the electronics recycling place as it is worthless to us.
Invest the extra money in a Sony. It will last longer.

Just check the Web- Magnavox is horrible. The first review that has five stars has not used their player mor than 10 times- because that is about the time it won't accept any more disk. Every person on the web has this same problem. Call Magnavox- and you get nother but an insult when they offer to sell you the same one you have in "exchange" for more money than you paid to start with. I treated this dvd player like a baby, never took it outside or even moved it more than once. They know they made a piece of junk with this one- and have just written it off. Well I've written them off too. You know- you try to buy American- and the corporates cry if you don't.
